Harry Pickup

2018, BA (Hons) Fine Art, Newcastle University

Harry Pickup is an artist based in Newcastle upon Tyne who specialises in printmaking. His work is interested in the role of technology in the creation of art and its relationship with more traditional techniques, in particular woodcut. Inspired by LCD screens and glitches, he experiments with different ways of representing digital patterns and colour through the layering of multiple laser cut woodblocks. The woodblocks themselves depict elements of numerous found glitches, which when layered together produce unique images that exist only as physical prints, formulated by a machine yet created by a human. More widely his practice is concerned with the influence of new technologies on modern society, and its increasing dependence on automation and artificial intelligence.
