2018, BA (Hons) Fine Art, Newcastle University

Becky Martin is an artist who specialise in metal work and sculpture. Her work involves the juxtaposition of steel and copper in separate works whilst relatedly using elements of shape, pattern and fragmentation to create geometric formations. Her aim is for the sculptures to invade and alter the space and become an all-pervading installation. She intends to create sculptural forms which coincides with the function of the material. Geometry expresses what most people consider to be the fundamental qualities of steel: its stability and structure. However, she also aims to express its complimentary opposite nature as well through playful positioning and the balancing of dissimilar size pieces. In comparison, within her copper pieces she also incorporates the alchemy and alteration of metal surfaces through patination, to ultimately seek a new aesthetic. The fieriness of the copper colour and its unpredictable quality creates a softer element which contrasts against the ordered structure of the shapes. Using the materiality of the metal and the arrangement in space, she intends to establish the importance of the physical experience of works of art.
